How Large Should My Deck Be?

by Patricia Brooks

When you decide to add a wood deck to your home, you may wonder how much of a deck you really need. Fortunately, there are some easy rules you can follow to make sure you have a deck that is the appropriate size.

Rules of Thumb

Do not build a deck that is more than 20% of the square footage of the home that the deck will be connected to. There should be no section of your deck that is larger than the largest room in your home. A typical deck is 300 to 400 square feet. Your deck should be wider than it is deep

High Elevation Decks

One option is to build a high elevation deck. Then you can have a space under your deck that serves as an additional living space. You will be able to create a deck that is shaded and sheltered, which is useful both on sunny days and when it is raining. In order to take advantage of this, you will need to have a drainage system installed.

Your Deck Design

When planning out the deck you want, get a notebook and a pen and sketch out a design for the deck. This will help you determine if there is anything unique you would like to do with your deck. Think about how you would like to use your deck. For example, if you will use a multi-layer design, you will be able to break up your deck for different activities. The higher area can be used for grilling and the lower area can be used for dining.

For instance, if you will be using it for cooking, you may need more space than if your deck would simply be a place to sit and read a book. Try to design the deck in a way that takes advantage of any beautiful views.

You may also want to expand your deck to take advantage of certain parts of your property that receive more shade so that friends and family members can congregate in these areas.

Your Deck Furniture

Before building the deck, you should purchase any furniture you would use and arrange the furniture. Then, you will have a better sense of how large your deck should be. Walk around your space to make sure that you have enough room to navigate your deck.

When in doubt, you are better off having a deck that is too large rather than having one that is too small. A small deck might not effectively serve the intended purpose. But with the right deck, you will have a location your family will use all the time.
